How to Focus on Prayer When Someone’s Wearing a Cute Pair of Shoes

Praying with A.D.H.D. Tendencies

Recently I was in a prayer group, head down, listening for God to speak when I realized my mind had wandered off to the cutest pair of shoes. In my defense, they were purple velvet with rhinestones.

Although I’ve never been formally diagnosed with A.D.H.D., I fit the mold. It drives hubby mad, claiming one topic at a time as sufficient (z-z-z-z-z). I can’t seem to help myself. As I write this I am singing along with Buddy Miles, updating my to-do list as forgotten chores pop into my head, wondering if my son will call later and planning tonight’s dinner.

Exhausting? Yes, sometimes. Yet somehow I get stuff done. What I find most frustrating is the noise in my head during prayer and meditation. I want nothing more than to hear God’s voice, bask in His Presence, soak in the Holy Spirit. I have over time learned a few tips that help. Here are the steps I take to obtain optimum time with the Lord.

Time

Mornings work best for me, approaching His throne with a supple heart, before I am wide awake. No checking texts or emails first. I do have a cup of coffee to sip as I enter into the relationship.
