Not only were the men creating a magnificent nativity scene that would end up consisting of 65-figures, but the prisoners also funded it. Many prisoners worked outside of the camp, helping farmers with crops, logging in forests, or with other needed tasks. Those working in or outside of camp earned ten cents per hour, not to exceed eighty cents per day. Non-workers were paid ten cents per day. This was paid in script that was negotiable in the camp canteen. These funds were donated from the prisoners to buy the supplies needed to create the figures.
