Maria is similarly and literally cloistered at the abbey, unable to express herself freely, as the nuns imply in the song, “Maria”: that’s why she’s “a problem.” Or as Maria herself tells the Abbess in the film, she can’t stop saying what she thinks and feels: as if hinting at the later ‘60s philosophy of “letting it all hang out” and “doing your own thang.”
