“mama I have made an terrible mistake. I dont know how long I can do this!!! I wished I had gone to canada with john mitchel to void the draft. what was I thinking? I’m ready to come home mama! They march us at 6 in the morning for inspection then march for ours in 95 degrees heat on black asphalt. I may not live another weak if I cant come home. the food is terrible and I can’t eat it. can you call our senator to see if I can get discharged. I cant do it much longer. I hate my company commander and he hates me. He told me if he meets me on a ship he would throw me off. I dont think he is joking! please help me out of here! I will hitch hike to canada if I can”
